Taking care of your floors often means reacting to spills quickly. By quickly mopping or treating the area with floor cleaner you can keep your floors looking as good as new. However, sometimes things spill without you knowing it or without your being able to clean it right at that moment. Sometimes whatever it is just sets in very fast. For tough stains here are some tips for getting them out depending on your floor type – keep in mind certain stains require specific solutions but these general tips should put you on the right track.
Wood
Laminate and Engineered hardwood are better at repelling liquids that traditional hardwood but they are still susceptible to staining. Start with a rag dampened with water – this can work on ink, fruit, and blood. For deep stains however you may have to remove the finish through a chlorine bleach solution. Afterwards the color will be changed so you’ll have to re-stain it before recoating.
Vinyl
One of vinyl flooring’s big selling points is it’s easiness to clean – nearly everything can be mopped away. However for heavy stains bleach can work though it should be mixed with one part bleach, four parts water, soaked in a rag, and the rag left over the stain. In about an hour or so you should see the stain has lifted. Simply rinse the floor with clean water afterwards.
Tile
Ceramic and porcelain tile flooring often have to deal with staining because they’re so commonly used in kitchens. Due to their porous nature stains can set in relatively easily but bleach can usually do the trick of getting it out. If stains are particularly heavy you might want to consider hydrogen peroxide or steam cleaning to remove them.
Carpet
There could be a book written on all the different things that get into carpet and how to get rid of them. It’s best to research your specific stain if you want to get it right though for many stains the following will work. Blot the stain – never scrub carpet — until it’s dry, working from the outside in, then rinse thoroughly, and blot dry again.
For every type of flooring and every type of stain there is a method to remove it though some can be more costly than others. If you’re looking for a more stain resistant flooring we offer a variety of possibilities here at Tony’s Flooring Centre. Contact us today.
