Engineered hardwood flooring combines the beauty of real wood with superior dimensional stability — making it the ideal choice for Toronto condos, basements, and homes with radiant heating. At Tony’s Flooring Centre, we carry a premium selection of engineered hardwood from leading Canadian and international manufacturers.
Engineered hardwood features a real hardwood veneer (typically 2-6mm thick) bonded to multiple layers of high-quality plywood. This cross-grain construction makes it far more resistant to humidity changes and temperature fluctuations than solid hardwood — a significant advantage in Toronto’s climate, where indoor conditions shift dramatically between summer and winter.
Each engineered plank consists of three key layers:
Wear layer (top) — Real hardwood veneer in your chosen species and finish. This is identical in appearance to solid hardwood once installed. Thicker veneers (4-6mm) can be sanded and refinished 1-2 times.
Core layers (middle) — Multiple plywood or HDF layers arranged in alternating grain directions. This cross-lamination is what gives engineered hardwood its stability — it resists expansion and contraction caused by moisture changes.
Backing layer (bottom) — A stabilizing layer that balances the plank and prevents warping.
Installs over concrete — Unlike solid hardwood, engineered planks can be glued or floated directly over concrete subfloors. This makes them the go-to choice for Toronto condominiums, basement renovations, and any space with a concrete slab.
Radiant heat compatible — The thin, stable construction conducts heat efficiently from in-floor heating systems. If you have or plan to install radiant heating, engineered hardwood is the recommended wood flooring option.
Handles humidity swings — Toronto’s humidity ranges from 20% in winter to 80% in summer. Engineered hardwood’s cross-grain construction tolerates these swings with minimal expansion or gapping — a common problem with solid hardwood in poorly humidified homes.
Wider planks available — Engineered construction allows for wider planks (up to 7-9 inches) without the cupping risk associated with wide solid hardwood. Wide-plank engineered floors are among the most popular choices for open-concept Toronto homes.
Cost-effective — Engineered hardwood typically costs 20-30% less than solid hardwood of the same species, with lower installation costs as well.
We carry engineered hardwood in all the same species available in solid: oak, maple, walnut, cherry, hickory, and birch. Once installed, the two are visually indistinguishable — visitors to your home will not be able to tell the difference.
Finish options include matte, satin, semi-gloss, and wire-brushed textures. Pre-finished engineered hardwood is factory-coated with UV-cured finish that’s harder and more consistent than on-site finishing, and it means no sanding dust or fumes in your home during installation.
Engineered hardwood offers three installation methods, giving you flexibility based on your subfloor:
Our installation team will assess your subfloor and recommend the best method for your space. Every installation is handled by our experienced in-house crew.
Our 4,100 sq ft showroom at 268 Royal York Rd in Etobicoke has engineered hardwood samples from every major manufacturer — see the grain, feel the texture, and compare species side by side. We’ve been helping Toronto homeowners choose the right flooring since 1961.
