Up-Cycling Projects: Don’t Throw Out Leftover Hardwood Flooring and Tiles

  • Wooden Plank Doormat
You’ll need:
  • Handsaw
  • 2×2 planks of wood
  • 6 feet of 1/4 inch sisal or twine
  • 3/8 inch drill bit
Cut planks so that they are 22″ in length. The size of the mat should be about 80 percent of the width of the doorway where it will be placed. If you would like to paint or stain the wood, sand it before inserting the rope. Use sisal for an indoor mat and something sturdier for an outdoor one. Remove any nails or staples from the wooden planks before standing the wood on its end and drilling two holes about three inches from each end of the plank. Cut three or four long strips of twine. Tape the ends. This makes it easier to thread through the holes. Tie a knot at the other end. Push the first bunch of twine through the top hole and then do the second hole on the same plank. Pull it through and tie a knot. This will give you a space for the water to drip through. Continue with the rest of the planks. When finished, tie off the ends using a double knot.
  • Do-it-yourself Picture Tiles
You’ll need:
  • Tiles
  • Printed photos (resized to match the size of your tile)
  • Scissors
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush
  • Sandpaper or sanding block (optional)
Cut out photo; don’t worry about cutting it straight. Flip it over and coat the back generously with Mod Podge. Give the back of the paper an even coating. Flip it over and place it on the tile. Gently rub the paper over the tile until you are happy with the way you have it positioned. Take a heavy object like a book or another tile. Press down and pull the object across your picture to remove any air bubbles. Pull in a single direction only. To remove excess paper around the edges, use sandpaper or a sanding block and run it firmly and quickly along the edge of the picture. You can also fold the edges down and secure with a small amount of Mod Podge. Next, brush Mod Podge over the front and sides of the picture to seal everything in place.    ]]>
