Maintaining a commercial floor is no easy feat and there are a lot of steps that you could follow. If you either a business owner, a property manager, or a maintenance personnel for a company, then you would probably appreciate any tips that can make your task a little easier.

Like any chore that involves a large space could be overwhelming but you need not cower from it, nor should you delay your task. Here are some tips that can help you take care of your property’s floor:

  1. Always have a plan.

Do not undertake any big chore without an actual plan, even if it’s something seemingly simple like floor maintenance. Sit down and think carefully what needs to be done, and how you are going to go about it. When it comes to floors, cleaning, buffing, stripping, polishing, and repairing are among the things that you probably have to perform. Figure out what your floor requires at the moment.

  1. Have just the right tools!

While it is important that you have a complete set of tools and any equipment for floor maintenance, it doesn’t mean that you always have to bring them for every job you do. Know which one will be useful and practical to bring, especially if you are going to do the cleaning during business hours.

  1. Double sweep before you coat.

Any commercial floor surface, be it hardwood, vinyl, polished concrete, or others would benefit from this simple trick. Similar to what carpenters say (“measure once, cut twice”) your floor maintenance needs the same concept. Sweep twice and finally coat once. It is very important that the floor is thoroughly clean before you apply wax or other type of coating.

  1. Don’t get too excited with the cleaning solutions.

It could be very tempting to go ahead and pour all the cleaning solutions or polishers available to you. However, that could be really wasteful! It is not so hard to just choose and measure out what is needed and keep the others for future use.

  1. Don’t neglect the edges and corners!

Some cleaners just clean high-traffic areas using equipment that can make the job easier. That is fine, as long as you do not forget about the baseboards, the corners, and the edges as dirt can accumulate in these areas.

Maintaining commercial floors is no rocket science but it is also not a piece of cake. The key to making things easier is to know the right way to do it. We hope that these tips will be helpful!

Frequently Asked Questions

What should Toronto homeowners know about flooring?

When considering flooring, evaluate durability, maintenance requirements, and cost per square foot for your specific needs. Tony’s Flooring Centre at 268 Royal York Rd offers expert advice and free estimates to help you make the right choice for your Toronto home.

How often should hardwood floors be refinished?

Hardwood floors typically need refinishing every 7-10 years in Toronto homes, depending on foot traffic and wear. Signs include visible scratches, dull finish, and discolouration. The NWFA provides detailed refinishing guidelines.

How do I protect floors from winter salt?

Place heavy-duty mats at all entrances to catch salt, sand, and moisture. Remove boots at the door — salt corrodes hardwood finishes. Clean up tracked-in salt immediately with a damp cloth and use runners in hallways during winter.
