What Colours Go Great with Wood

Flooring Tips
Dining Room and Kitchen Interior — Toronto

The great thing about wood (or bamboo) flooring, cabinetry, or accents is the natural glow it can lend to any room. It brings warmth and a natural feel regardless of its texture or colour.   It’s important not to fight against the benefits wood can bring aesthetically and to instead enhance them in contrast with the right colours. The great news is that whether the wood is a darker tint, a whiter shade, or a honey or reddish brown, most of the colour choices that go with one kind of wood will usually go with the others – though the quality of the effect will vary.

The Whites

A standard white is an obvious choice for any wood infused room – that said stay away from anything that’s too stark and go with something softer with creamy undertones. A creamy white works beautifully with amber floors or trim and the right eggshell finish will give just the right lustre. Going a full rich cream can also be nice but make sure to minimize the yellow – it can clash dramatically with the color of lumber.

The Browns

Stay away from darker browns even if your wood is similar. The idea is to contrast walls from floors to create a greater sense of space so lighter colours above darker woods is generally preferable. Tans and beiges work well with light woods as well which makes them an excellent choice.

Sky and Sea

Due to woods natural feel it’s often paired well with shades that evoke the outdoors. Lighter grays can work well with blonder woods especially. Don’t be afraid of going bright either – a light or sky blue can lift a room and dramatically brighten it. Go with aqua or turquoise to evoke a beautiful day at the beach.

Sunsets in the Desert

For the same reason blues can work so well so too can oranges and reds – giving the feeling of a warm dusky evening. Try to stay away from anything too bright – go with deeper tones with hints of brown.
