Autumn Dangers to Your Floor

Flooring Tips
Autumn leaves — Toronto

As the days grow shorter and the weather gets cooler it can only mean that fall has come back to Canada. Autumn is a great time to get out, watch the leaves change, and enjoy a pumpkin spice latte – especially in the run up to the bustle that comes with the holiday season. With any season comes a need to adapt to the changes it brings. For autumn that means wearing a jacket and watching out for fog on the way to work. The season doesn’t just bring changes to the outside however and there are some implications for your flooring as well.

Moisture

The big thing to watch for early in the season is moisture. Heavy rains bring in a greater chance of tracking in water that can wreak havoc on wood floors. Too much moisture can create swelling, warping, or cupping. This goes for both traditional and engineered hardwoods. Other flooring types like tile or vinyl are much more resilient against water but still need to be checked to make sure there’s no moisture buildup.

Alternatively, later in the season as we seal ourselves away at home more often, the opposite problem has the potential to occur. The cold outside can pull the moisture out of a home and humidity can drop dramatically. If humidity inside drops below 35%, wood can dry out, which can lead to weakening and potentially splintering, which obviously damages the finish. As a result it’s best to keep a humidifier active and keep humidity within the correct range.

Cold

Cold floors come back as the temperature drops. While keeping it within livable norms will prevent any damage, regardless of the type of flooring, that doesn’t make them comfortable. While there are options like radiant floor heat available for installation that can solve the problem permanently there are cheaper options. Some nice area rugs can protect your bare feet from your frigid floors while also creating a pleasant look for any room. Of course, you could just break those bunny slippers out of the closet.

Autumn can be a wonderful time of the year and if the right precautions are taken your floors will get through it with no problems at all. If you’d like to discuss flooring options or take a look at our diverse inventory of area rugs contact us at Tony’s Flooring Centre today.
