So you’ve finally got those hardwood floors in, or maybe you already have them, and you’re worried that they’ll start to show their age.  Hardwood is actually quite hardy but to keep it in tip-top shape you will need to know how to clean it properly to maintain its health and shine.  Here are some important tips to remember when cleaning wood floors.

No Vinegar

The internet is full of home cleaning methods of which many extol the awesome power of vinegar.  And while vinegar can be a great choice for surfaces like ceramic it is absolutely terrible for wood.  It can eat away whatever is sealing the floor, reducing the sheen and making damage to the wood underneath that much more likely.

Watch the Moisture

You also don’t want to use a lot of water, and never a dripping wet mop, on hardwood floors.  That moisture can get into the wood causing stains, warping, and other damage.  Use moisture sparingly while cleaning through a spray bottle or microfiber cloth that is damp but not wet.

Use the Right Tools

In addition to microfiber cloth (usually affixed to a mop handle) make sure to use cleaner specifically formulated for wood floors.  Your flooring manufacturer will recommend a particular brand and that should be used to ensure your warranty isn’t voided.

The Right Way

Make sure to sweep the area with a dry cloth first to remove any remaining dust or particulates.  Try to keep the cloth on the floor at all times to ensure no dust gets underneath and ends up scratching the finish.  Vacuum near the baseboards to completely ensure no loose dirt is left.  Mist a small area with the correct cleaning product and use a microfiber cloth that is made for wet use over the area following the wood grain.  Repeat until the full floor is completed.  This way you can ensure the floor stays mostly dry and the full extent of it has been treated by the cleaner.

This may seem like quite a task but with a few attempts it should become second nature.  Besides, a little work to keep your floors shiny and beautiful is well worth the effort.   If you’re looking to get some new hardwood floors, or perhaps to see what other flooring options are available, contact our team at Tony’s Flooring Centre today.
