If you’re like most homeowners, you probably take all the precautions you can to protect your carpet, hoping that you can keep stains from happening and compromising its beauty. But let’s all face it – it’s bound to happen sometime. It may be in the form of your little one’s Kool-Aid dripping from his sippy cup or your furry friend’s lack of control. Whatever the stain (and the reason behind it) may be, what’s more important is that you know how to remove it.
One thing you can do to make sure that you can handle the dreaded ‘stain situation’ when it happens is by learning some effective methods and techniques so that you won’t just scream in panic when you get a spill. Read on and find out how you can remove some of the most common carpet stains.
COFFEE STAINS
Coffee stains have that yellowish brown tone that can turn your carpet from fab to drab. To remove it, dry the spot first by blotting it with a clean and dry white towel. Prepare a mixture of water, vinegar, and a little non-bleach detergent. Pour it in a spritzer and spritz away! Make sure you rinse with a clean damp towel before you repeat.
JUICE STAINS
Fruit juices are a common culprit for carpet stains. That doesn’t mean you should give up trying to remove the stains altogether. Like with coffee stains, blot the stain first – don’t rub. Try a mixture of dish soap, white vinegar, and warm water. Spray the stain liberally and let it sit for up to 10 minutes and continue blotting with a clean towel until you get the stain out.
PET STAINS
You love your pets. But there are probably few things you hate more than the stains they leave on your beloved carpet. If an “accident” happens, make sure you remove any debris and dispose of it properly. If wet, blot away until the carpet is almost dry and the stain is gone. If it has already dried, try to moisten the spot again and apply your carpet stain remover. Work on neutralizing the odour as well by spritzing on some vinegar and water spray. Blot and rinse with warm water.
INK STAINS
Ink stains are more complicated than most other carpet stains. A few handy household products may be able to help you remove them. First, dampen a clean cloth with isopropyl alcohol and dab it on the ink stain, carefully avoiding rubbing and spreading it. You might have to apply more alcohol and carefully blot and vacuum dry the spot.
