Flooring Tips

Basement Flooring Ideas and Tips When selecting a flooring type for your basement you need to keep the following factors in mind: price, resistance to water, temperature (this is Canada after all!), usability, upkeep and installation. To help make evaluating easier let’s go over the most common basement flooring ideas and options… Vinyl Vinyl flooring has long been popular as it is inexpensive, relatively easy to install and quite impervious to water (if it is sheet vinyl). It is one of the most cost-effective options, at pennies per square foot, requires little maintenance and is easy to fix or replace. It is a little more expensive concrete, but warmer to the touch. It is also easy to clean. The only downside is that it still isn’t as warm to the touch like other materials and it isn’t popular with homebuyers—so it doesn’t add any value to your home. It is still popular in low-traffic areas though, like laundry and storage rooms. For higher traffic areas on a budget, consider luxury vinyl tile for a faux stone or wood look. Concrete Concrete is the most popular choice for unfinished basements. It is the cheapest material on the market and it is cold to the touch—but it can stand up to almost anything. Since you’re likely reading this list to find something to cover up your cold concrete with we won’t spend too much time on concrete. Ceramic Tile Ceramic tiling in basements is as popular as it is durable and water-resistant. It is however cooler on the tootsies, which makes it a good candidate for underfloor heating. Ceramic tiles are fairly quick to install but do require levelling—and therefor professionally installation. Laminate Laminate flooring is a popular option for finished basements as it offers a layer of protection between the cold concrete and the floor, which makes it significantly warmer on the feet. It also presents beautifully and is relatively easy to install. It’s only major downside is that it is the most susceptible to water damage. So—if you live in a flood-prone area consider a laminate flooring type that has a water-resistant protective coating.
