Laminate Flooring: A Buying Guide

Home — Toronto

Let’s begin with what laminate flooring is. Laminate flooring is a multi-layered synthetic flooring that simulates wood. The ‘wood’ is actually a picture/pattern printed onto the top of its many layers. There are 4 layers to laminate flooring: the backing layer that provides the structural integrity, the core that gives it its strength and flexibility, the photographic layer and the wear layer that prevents damage. The wear layer provides most of the durability, which makes it one of the most important buying decisions. Wear Ratings If you’ve already been shopping around for laminate flooring then you’ve seen the large variance in price. When it comes to pricing—you get what you pay for. A floor’s wear rating is measured by its quality, durability, warranty, moisture resistance and the variance in its printed pattern.

The laminate’s durability is largely attributable to the abrasion class rating. Abrasion Class (AC) ratings

There are three class ratings that are designed for residential flooring:

  1. AC1 – Moderate Residential: for areas with light traffic, including closets and bedrooms
  2. AC2 – General Residential: for most rooms, including living and dining rooms
  3. AC3 – Heavy Residential (and Moderate Commercial): durable enough for even the highest traffic areas
Which Rating is Right for Me? When deciding what rating of floor to buy you need to consider a number of things. Most importantly, value and your lifestyle. Do you need AC3 floors? Perhaps you’re a family of tap dancers, in which case you may need AC5. Most families can get by fine with AC2. Another element to look for is the warranty, if you’re planning on staying in your home a long time you’ll want a higher rating.

AC rating isn’t the only concern though, laminate-flooring warranties generally range from 15-30 years—but, don’t buy a floor with a low warranty thinking you’ll have them replace it in a few years…as you’d still have to tear it up and reinstall it.

So, think carefully about your needs before you buy, then balance that with a price point you can afford. After all, you don’t want to be eating rice and beans while sitting on your beautiful, expensive floors. ]]>
