Steps Involved in How to Refinish a Hardwood Floor

  1. Sand off the old finish.
You need to use a walk-behind floor sander and a hand-held power edge sander for getting into the tight spaces against walls, in corners and near doorways. Each of these units comes with its own vacuum and a dust bag system to minimize the amount of dust that they leave behind 2.  Fill in any gouges or nicks in the floor. Apply wood putty with a broad knife to fill in any spots. Let it dry according to directions on the package before sanding the areas smooth with a medium or fine-grade sandpaper. 3.  Wipe down floor, walls, and trim. Once the sanding has been completed, you’ll need to remove all traces of dust from the floor, trim, and walls. Start with the walls, working from the top down. The last thing you want is for dust to fall down onto the floor while your new finish is drying. Give the dust some time to settle, then use a shop vacuum with a dust filter to remove it from the floor. 4.  Wipe the floor with a tack cloth. The next step is to wipe the entire surface of the floor with a tack cloth. This type of cloth has been specially treated with a waxy substance to pick up dust particles. You should plan to use more than one tack cloth to avoid overloading a cloth and missing any of the residue. 5.  Apply the finish. At this point, you would apply the finish onto your floor. Be sure to apply it evenly over the surface of your floor. It sits on the surface of the wood, so avoid having any spots where the finish sits in a pool. Buff with fine steel wool. Vacuum and wipe the floor with a tack cloth. Apply the first of two coats of finish wax, polyurethane or varnish. Allow to dry between coats. Apply the final coat and wait at least 24 hours after the final coat dries before moving furniture into the room.   If all this sounds like too much work to take on by yourself, Tony’s Flooring Centre offers professional refinishing services.
