Marine Litter Being Repurposed into Carpet Materials

Carpet

Marine Litter Turns into Carpet Products The Dutch carpet manufacturer has been using ECONYL yarn in several of its carpet products since 2010. It is part of the company’s commitment to the circular economy powered by Cradle to Cradle principles. These principles ensure that the materials used in its products are as healthy possible while remaining safely recyclable. This Cradle to Cradle vision is to design products and services that make the world “better than it was before.” The oceans have been fished extensively and harmful waste products have been left behind. With the Healthy Seas initiative, Desso will be able to develop its business model, which is to use waste to create new materials and create a positive impact on the Earth. Discarded Fishing Nets Make Up Marine Litter According to a report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), there are about 640,000 tons of abandoned fishing nets currently in the oceans. They make up approximately 10 percent of marine litter. Once the fishing nets have been discarded, they can remain in the ocean for hundreds of years. They present a hazard, as they can continue to catch and injure various types of marine life, including fish, turtles, dolphins and birds. Healthy Seas attempts to provide a solution by teaming up with businesses, divers, fishermen, and other interested parties to recover the nets. Once they have been recovered, they are up-cycled into carpets, as well as clothing (underwear, socks, swimwear), and other items.
