It is true that proper maintenance can definitely extend the life of your carpet. Every carpet, especially those that has been walked on constantly, will need to be replaced in time. When do you know that your carpet has had it? What are the signs that your favourite carpet needs replacement?
Too Many Stains
Stains on your carpet are inevitable. You might have done what other homeowners resort to and cover up stubborn and obvious stains with furniture and smaller rugs. If your house is beginning to look like a minefield and you keep bumping into things, perhaps it is time to replace your carpet. While most carpets are coated with stain-resistant finishes, they still fade over time.
Too Stinky
It is natural for carpets to smell a little, more so if you haven’t cleaned it in a while or if you have pets at home. The odour should be gone or at least be lessened after a thorough cleaning. If it doesn’t, it could be that the odour has penetrated the carpet fibers. It could also be an indication that mould and mildew are growing on the carpet pad. If this is the case, it would be more economical to replace your carpet completely.
Too Worn and Torn
If your kids refuse to lay or play on your carpet, it’s not a good sign. If you notice that your carpet is matted on most areas and that there are signs like significant wear and tear, especially on the walkways that see more traffic, then your carpet’s life is nearing its end.
Too Uneven Carpet Padding
Your carpet is nothing without its padding. This is actually the sturdy sheet that supports your carpet, serving as a foundation. It makes your carpet comfortable, improves insulation in the room, and buffers sounds as well. But there are unavoidable factors that affect the condition of your carpet padding, like spills. Unfortunately, even when you clean your carpet, it doesn’t necessarily mean you clean the padding, too. If you notice that your padding is getting too uneven and wrinkled, prepare yourself for a new carpet purchase.
Too Old
Do you still have that retro carpet you purchased when you first moved in to your house? If so, then you have done a great job maintaining it. Be reminded though, that carpets don’t last forever even with the best care. Most manufacturers will tell you that if your carpet has lasted for 10 years, then it has served you well. Carpet fibers lose their tuft and texture in time. If you notice that no amount of cleaning gets you the result you want then give your trusted carpet a much needed retirement.
