How to Prepare for a Flooring Installation

Floor installation

If you are going to replace your floor, it is understandable that you are feeling anxious while you wait for the installers to come. You do not have to just sit back though. There are some simple preparations that you can do while you count the days until their arrival. These steps can help mitigate the dust, the fuss, and the unavoidable damage caused by installations. Of course, if your floor is coming from a reputable company, you can be assured of their precautions. Still, it is no big thing for you to take some safety precautions yourself, eh?

Deal with the dust. The installers may or may not take preparations to contain the dust and you can definitely do better. Start by sealing off rooms that will not be sanded. Closing the doors may not be enough and you may need to cover the doorway with plastic and some masking tape. You could also try getting plastic curtains to help a bit more.

Detach your doors. While all reputable floor installation companies will surely do this, it might still be best if you perform this task so you can also store the doors safely. To make sure you do not damage your doors, you can separate each door with a blanket. Move and store them away from the work-site until they need to be re-installed.

Remove the baseboards. This is the best way for the installers to get the flooring. This could be your chance to get new baseboards too! If you are unsure about this, another option is to let the installers cut under the baseboards and just insert the flooring underneath, which is a much more complicated and definitely less preferable way.

Deal with the door trim. What are you planning to do with it? You can have the new flooring installed around it or cut under it and install the flooring underneath. If you are concerned that you won’t achieve a 100% polished finish, you can choose to remove and reinstall the door trim after the floor is done. This could be tedious of course.

Prep a cutting area outside your home. It would be encouraging for the installers to cut their floorboards to see that you have prepared a specific area for this. Make sure that the space is well lit but still has some shade, near an outdoor outlet, and close to the doorway for easy interior access. We suggest for you to have it done in your covered patio or garage.

When all these preparations are done, all that’s left for you to do is wait for the installers to come and look forward to your new floors!

What should Toronto homeowners know about flooring installation?

When considering flooring installation, evaluate durability, maintenance requirements, and cost per square foot for your specific needs. Tony’s Flooring Centre at 268 Royal York Rd offers expert advice and free estimates to help you make the right choice for your Toronto home.

How should I prepare for flooring installation?

Remove all furniture from rooms being floored, clear closets, and ensure the subfloor is clean and dry. Acclimate new flooring materials in your home for 48-72 hours before installation to adjust to indoor humidity levels.

Do I need to remove old flooring first?

It depends on the type. LVP and engineered hardwood can often go over existing hard surfaces. Carpet must always be removed. Tony’s Flooring handles all removal and disposal as part of our installation service.
