You might not notice this but carpets can actually enhance the way a room looks. It can add warmth, bring colour, and make your space homier. That is why most homeowners choose to have lush carpets for their floors. For your carpet to last a long time though, you would have to put in some effort in maintaining it. While that is not an easy chore to do, it is not an impossible task either.

Here, we have rounded up for you some maintenance tips that you can do to extend the life of your carpet:

Learn how to remove spots effectively! If you are used to having carpets for your flooring, then you already know how important this is. Perhaps you even have mastered a trick or two to make this chore easier. For those who have no idea how to do it, then please read on. You might think that removing a spot is probably the easiest part of carpet maintenance. Well, not quite. You have to do things right to make this task easy. For example, for new carpets, there is a high possibility that spots could be removed by plain tap water. Why? New carpets have sufficient protectors so that stains could not penetrate your carpet that much.

For more stubborn spots, then use a spot cleaner that is recommended by carpet experts and manufacturers. Never use over-the-counter spot removers as they leave excessive soap residue and cause yellowing. Do not pour the spot cleaner on your carpet directly either. Use it sparingly and with a white terry cloth then make circles on the spot. This will result to the spot transferring into the terry cloth. For stains that are really difficult to remove and spots caused by pet urine or feces, it’s better to call in professional cleaners. What is most important is that you remove any spots immediately before they really get absorbed by your carpet.

Vacuum thoroughly! Do it regularly, too! Weekly or bi-weekly would probably be enough. Doing so will help remove sharp soil that can cause premature wear when it cuts and slices the carpet fiber. Because this soil is usually not visible to the human eye, you have to vacuum your carpet even when they do not appear soiled. Vacuuming will also remove particles like crayon bits, bugs, crumbs and more!

For dents caused by furniture or other heavy objects, you can stroke the area with a coin’s edge. You can also use a hair dryer and a steam iron. Just make sure you are careful when you do – you don’t want to put more damage to your carpet.

Considering the number of stains and foot traffic your carpet has to go through over the months, you might need to have it cleaned professionally every 12 to 18 months.

Carpets really add value to our homes. For the warmth and comfort it gives, it deserves to be cared for. Besides, taking good care of your carpet means extending its life for twice as long or even longer! That will also save you more money, won’t it?
