Choosing the Right Flooring for Your Basement

Having a basement means you have extra space that is open to a world of possibilities. From games rooms to theatre spaces to playrooms and everything in between, the basement can be anything you want it to be.

When it comes to choosing flooring for the basement, this comes with its own set of challenges. Basements are often moister and damper than other parts of the house, so the possibility of mould and mildew growing increases. Having the wrong type of flooring can contribute to this growth, which can impact you and your family’s health.

If mould and mildew growth occurs, this can damage the floors and anything that is sitting on top of them. Furniture, toys, electronic equipment, etc. can be damaged by the growth of these unwanted spores. Do yourself a favour and make sure to pick the right type of flooring for your basement. Below are some options you might want to consider.

  1. Floating Floors

This type of flooring isn’t nailed or glued down, so there’s an opportunity to place a moisture barrier between the basement’s concrete slab and the flooring. This can decrease the chances of mould and mildew growing while giving you a beautiful and functional floor.

Floating floors that are suitable for installing in a basement include carpet tiles, luxury vinyl planks and tiles, cork flooring, sheet vinyl, engineered hardwood, and laminate.

  1. Ceramic Tile

This flooring choice is incredibly durable and water resistant. The tiles themselves will not contribute to mould or mildew growth, but the grout between could become problematic. However, by treating it with a water sealant, the chance of these growing can be reduced.

Ceramic tile comes in a variety of colours and patterns, so you’ll be able to find one that matches your décor and style needs.

  1. Floor Tiles and a Vapor Barrier

Getting floor tiles that come with an attached vapour barrier will reduce the amount of mould and mildew growth in your basement and give you a variety of flooring options to choose from. These come in carpet tiles or tiles that look like natural stone. This flooring protects you from hazardous growth and gives you the comfort you hope for in your basement.

Getting the right flooring for your basement is important to match the style and décor of the area, but also for the health of the people in the house. There are options available for any style or design, and talking to a flooring professional will give you the option of picking the flooring that suits your tastes and needs.

Investing in Laminate Flooring

The ambiance of any room depends upon the kind of flooring it has. For instance, when your friends, family or relatives visit your home, the first thing they notice is the flooring. The same goes for your customers or clients if you have a commercial space.

On that note, it is highly important that you take a great amount of consideration before settling on a flooring for your residential or commercial space. There are many types of flooring to choose from – this is where it can get a bit challenging. You have to know first what characteristics of flooring you are looking for.

If you are looking for flooring that is both versatile and inexpensive, then laminate flooring is your best option. This type of flooring comes in different colours, styles, and patterns.

Laminate flooring is gaining popularity because of its strength and durability. Many homeowners and business owners are choosing this type of flooring because of the benefits they get from it.

Here are some of the good reasons why you should invest in laminate flooring:

*It is resistant to stains, scratches, fading, and wearing out. If your room or space gets heavy foot traffic from people, pets, and objects, then you might want to consider this characteristic as a strong one.

*The installation of laminate flooring is also easily done. It will not take too much time, so you do not have to worry about your work operations or personal time being disrupted.

*In terms of appeal, laminate flooring also comes in different colours, styles and patterns. You can customize it however you want it, having your personality reflected on any room.

Important point to remember:

However, once damaged, laminate flooring cannot be sanded down, rebuffed or polished in order to look new again. You have to completely replace tiles or planks.

The Different Types of Laminate Flooring

Some of the most sought-after laminate flooring types are the following:

-Tile and stone laminate

-Wood laminate

-White laminate

-Brown laminate

-Gray laminate

*Red laminate

*Tan laminate

The Basics of Basement Flooring

It’s finally time to do up the basement. Whether you want to freshen up an already finished area or finally take advantage of all that raw space you’re ready to do what it takes to make it great. Like every other room the best place to start is the floors. Your basement are unlike the other areas in many ways so there are some specific things you should know about what flooring is right for it.

Wood

Due to the fact that your basement is likely built with a concrete floor that may not be entirely even standard hardwood floors are not recommended as they need to be anchored to the subfloor. Still, there are options for those seeking a natural glow to their basement floor. Engineered hardwood has greater stability and brings less worry about the expanding or contracting that can come with humidity and temperature changes that many basements are prone to. Laminate has much the same benefits and, along with engineered hardwood, is a “floating floor” which means it’s much easier to install on concrete.

Vinyl

Vinyl has long been a standard in basement flooring for good reason. It’s hardy against moisture and won’t rip or tear under normal use. Whether in tile form or planks vinyl flooring can provide a hardy and easy-to-clean floor with a terrific look.

Ceramic

Ceramic tile is the great granddaddy of basement flooring. It can be attached directly to concrete and provides a classic elegant look in an area often crying out for it while simultaneous preserving vertical space. Ceramic also has the benefit of being extremely resistant against water and water vapor.

Carpet

When in doubt, cover it with carpet. You may not need to evoke the feel of a luxury pool hall or boutique hotel with your basement. You might just need a little extra family space and some protection from that cold basement floor and carpet will definitely do that. You can add a little luxury by going thicker or stick with textured cut pile carpet for durability and longevity.

There are some great options in basement flooring and as long as you pay attention to moisture and other issues every one of them can be terrific. If you’re looking to improve your basement’s flooring contact Tony’s Flooring today and we’ll guide you through a variety of great options.

How to Prepare for Your New Floor

Now that you have decided to have hardwood floor installed, what happens next?

Knowing what you should expect before, during, and after the installation takes place will help make sure that everything goes smoothly.

Once you have visited Tony’s Flooring Centre and have chosen the beautiful hardwood floor or perhaps that special luxurious carpet for your home, you might think that there’s nothing much you need to do. Well, it is true that our team will take care of the installation. However, it wouldn’t hurt to prepare your home for the arrival of the installers, right?

To help you out, we have prepared for you this checklist that aims to get you ready for your upcoming floor installation:

*Remove all breakables in the room and in the adjoining rooms as well. Yes, even the frames, mirrors, and other décor that you might have on your walls.

*Plan how you will get all the appliances and furniture out of the rooms in the house where you’d have the new flooring installed.

*Ask for a professional to have your gas appliances and your electronics safely disconnected.

*Check if you need to adjust the doors if there’s going to be a change in the floor height. If you overlook this, you might have a problem opening and closing the doors later on.

*Remove all the curtains and drapes.

*Remove and store away all the items that you have in closets and cabinets where the new floors would be installed.

*Make sure that you clean the floors prior to the installation of new floors.

*Prepare an area outside where your installers can do all the necessary cutting, reshaping, and other preparations needed for your floor installation. Ideally, this space would have sufficient space so the installers would be comfortable working even when it gets a little hot during the day. Also ensure that there’s a working electrical outlet in the area.

*Finally, let your family know of the expected timeframe for this flooring job so they can adjust their activities accordingly. You might want to consider having your family, especially your kids move in with relatives or friends until the installation is done.

No matter what type of flooring you’re going to have installed, it would be very wise to follow these preparation tips. Once you are done with these, you can be sure that your trusted Toronto floor installers from Tony’s Flooring Centre will be ready to take over and have your perfect floor ready for you in no time!

How to Prepare Your Home for Flooring Installation

If you’re getting new wood floors installed, you shouldn’t just wait for the installers to arrive. As the homeowner, you’d want to do some preparations to lessen the dust and other messes that are often unavoidable when floors are being installed. While you can expect reputable installers to take precautions and clean up after the project, it’s still better that you’re prepared.

Here are some things that you can do:

  1. Do what you can to protect the rest of your house from the dust. Seal off room that won’t be sanded. On top of closing the doors, you’d find that covering the doorways with plastic and some masking tape can help a lot.

  1. Remove and carefully store your doors. Any good floor installation company will remove the doors, but it’s still better that you do that if only to be sure that they are safely stored, too. You can separate each door with a blanket. Store the doors in an area where it won’t be moved, so the workspace is definitely not the place for them.

  1. You would have to remove the baseboards to get the flooring under and have them (or new ones) installed when the job is done. Another option is to have the installers cut under the baseboards to fit the flooring underneath, but that’s not the preferable way to go.

  1. Prepare the cutting area. If you want the installers to cut the floorboards in a specific area, like the garage, you’d want to prepare that area for them, too. To make sure it’s a good spot, choose one that’s near the doorway to access the inside of your door easily. Also, check if there’s access to an outlet as you can be sure they’d ask for one.

  1. You also have to know beforehand if your floor installers will remove door trim. If you want a really polished finish, it’s wiser to have them removed first, but you should know that it’s going to be a long road ahead. Also, ask if sub-floor installation is included in the package. If not, it’s better to have the sub-floor tight and solid before the installers arrive.

With these simple steps, you can make the whole flooring installation project easier not only for the installers but for you, too!

Flooring Tricks to Make Your Room Look Bigger

Isn’t it amazing that every house seems to have that one room that is just a bit too small? You probably know all the other tricks to make the room appear bigger – choose the appropriate size furniture and arrange them cleverly, install mirrors, and paint the walls lighter – but it still looks a bit cramped.

Don’t feel frustrated just yet! There’s still one more option, and it may just be the most important one! We are talking about installing the right flooring. Here are some flooring tricks to help you:

Choose Dark Flooring

While many people think that light colours could lend a sense of bigger space, dark flooring can actually help make a room expand right before you. Go for cherry, walnut, or oak and match that with cool colour for your wall, trim, ceiling, and moulding.

Go for Bigger Tiles

It’s easier to go for small strips for your small room but you shouldn’t. Instead, go for the widest planks you can get. If you’re going to have vinyl floors, choose a larger size than the standard 12-inch ones. Also use minimal grout when you install your tile floors.

Install the Flooring Diagonally

It does not matter what flooring material you choose. You should install the flooring diagonally to achieve the look of a bigger room. Because the widest part of the tile is facing you when you enter the room, it also tricks your eyes into believing that the space is actually bigger than it is. This applies for natural stone, hardwood, tiles, and laminate flooring.

Have a Consistent Flooring Design throughout the Home

You can easily create that much-needed illusion of a more expansive space by just using a consistent design all throughout your home. You can achieve a more seamless look of you join adjacent spaces with the same type and design of flooring. We know that you probably have planned different looks or themes for each room, but the thing is, when you use different flooring materials, that breaks up your floor space into smaller chunks of spaces, which is not what you’re going for.

Your flooring choice can really make a lot of difference on how big or small your home’s rooms would appear. So don’t stop at just rearranging furniture and adding more lighting to the room. Follow the simple tips that we have given you.

Popular Office Flooring Options

Very few things have a bigger impact on the overall look of an office like its flooring. An office warrants a specific look that would best reflect the kind of business that is going on in that space. Flooring, however, goes beyond its contribution to the aesthetic aspects of a room. More than that, the level of comfort it brings as well as its functionality has a big effect on the productivity of those who are working in that area.

Now you know that choosing your office flooring is an extremely important process. So let’s go over some of the top options for you.

CARPET FLOORING

Broadloom carpets have two main types, which are the woven carpet flooring and the tufted carpet. Woven carpeting is a classic style which dates back to about 200 years ago. It tends to be a little more expensive than other types because of how intensive and intricate the process of making it requires. The designs are often grander. Woven carpets are a top choice for offices that are concerned with both durability and aesthetics.

Tufted carpets are more contemporary in comparison when it comes to method of production. Because it is easier and faster to manufacture it is ultimately cheaper. It is also durable and flexible, making it a favourite among designers, too.

Modular carpets or carpet tiles are often used in facilities that prefer fast and easy changes. They are cost effective and flexible too. They come with varied features like variegated pattern, printed tiles, and added cushioning for better foot feel.

VINYL FLOORING

Sheet vinyl floorings are rolled out over a flat surface and then heat welded in place. This procedure ensures that there are no residue under. As you know, vinyl is very durable. It is also water and slip resistant.

Vinyl planks come in various styles and finishes. There are some that can mimic the look of wod tiles and many other materials. They can be laid wet or dry. They are often less costly and easier to lay compared to sheet vinyl.

ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORING

This type of flooring comes with a lot of benefits. It is a cost-effective, durable, and very beautiful alternative to hardwood flooring, making it a good choice for office spaces.

The right kind of flooring for your office is crucial to creating an aesthetically pleasant and functional work area. It is truly among the biggest decisions you have to make for your office. The Best Flooring to Keep Your Family Warm

Don’t you just hate it when you wake up in the morning and you feel icy cold floor under your bare feet? This is common especially during the colder months. The main problem is not just the climate or the weather. It also has a lot to do with the material of your flooring – some retain heat more efficiently while others just lose it fast. There are also other factors like products that insulate your environment, giving a warmer and cozier feel to a space.

Today though, we’d focus on which flooring types are actually your best bet if you are looking for a warmer surface covering.

  1. Carpets

You are probably expecting this at the top of your list, and here it is. It is, indeed, the most popular flooring solution if you want to achieve warmth. That’s why you can find it I most bedrooms and living rooms. Of course, those with thicker threads will be more beneficial especially during winter as they also insulate your room. Just make sure it is suitable for your environment, too.

  1. Cork Floors

Surprised? Well, cork floors are a really good choice. How does cork work? Well it has countless tiny air pockets that act like insulation cushions that keep hot air from seeping out and cold air from getting in. It’s also pretty easy to install.

  1. Vinyl Floors

You know this is a resilient material that is quite resistant to damages like water penetration, discolouration, and stains, among others. Although it is too thin to possess any warmth of its own, it can easily be paired with a padded underlayment with materials like foam or cork for durable functionality and warmth.

Those are some of the best types of warm flooring that you can choose from. Of course, there are ways to keep your floors warm too. You can have area or throw rugs. These are great to have in specific spots like beside your bed, so you get to protect your feet from the chilly bite of cold floors. You can also try below surface heating. This system will be installed underneath your flooring to keep your space comfortable and warm.

If you decide to get your room, or even your entire home a much warmer floor, contact Tony’s Flooring Centre. We have an array of flooring options for you to choose from – all designed to be both aesthetically pleasing, durable, and comfortable.

Should You Replace Your Floor Before the Year Ends?

Your flooring is an important and permanent part of your home. It’s not like Christmas or Thanksgiving decorations that you can box and store away after a few weeks or months. It would also take much longer for you to replace it. That is why homeowners usually wait until it is absolutely necessary and logical to replace it.

If you’re thinking of getting new ones before the year ends, perhaps you also want to know if there’s a need for you to do it. Here are some signs to look out for:

  1. There are cracks. More than just being unsightly, cracks are also a sign of an underlying problem. It could be you have foundation problems! It may be caused by other things too, like climate, and heavy objects, or perhaps the material’s too thin.
  2. You hear creaky sounds. Do you hear noise when you walk from one area to another and it’s not your shoes causing it? Well, you’re not supposed to hear any. Hardwood usually creaks as years pass because depending on your home’s foundation (as well as the moisture) it could expand or contract. If it’s a ceramic tile, it could be the glue binding your tile to the concrete slab is cracking.
  3. You can’t find a replacement tile that matches. There may be just two or more cracked tiles so you first checked if you can find something that’s of the same design – and there isn’t. Well, finding a perfect match for your flooring is not an easy feat as manufacturers often discontinue producing a particular style after a season or so. That is why you probably won’t find the exact one that you need. That is also the reason why it’s advisable for you to buy an extra box or even two of the tile you’re getting when you replace your flooring.
  4. Your carpet is just stained permanently. Do you know that the most recent carpets produced are virtually stain-resistant? So if yours has more stains than clean spots, then it’s really a good idea to replace it and welcome the new year with a fresher (not to mention easier to maintain) carpet!
  5. The grout looks grimy. You know what we mean. Grouts can look unsightly if you never clean it, or it stays greasy for long periods, there’s always high traffic, or they are really old. Whatever the reason is, once your grout reaches a point when it seems impossible to really clean it, you should consider getting new floors with new grouts!

These are just a few things that can help you decide to replace your floors before 2017 kicks in. There are a lot more reasons out there of course. However, one that should matter most is whether or not you really want to – because if you do, then just do it! Give us a call and we’d provide you with the best options!
